Butler Visiting Writers Series: Viet Thang Nguyen
Author, critic-at-large for The Los Angeles Times, and recipient of a MacArthur “Genius” Grant, Viet Thanh Nguyen is professor of English, American Studies and Ethnicity, and Comparative Literature at the University of Southern California. His debut novel, The Sympathizer, won the Pulitzer Prize, was a Dayton Literary Peace Prize winner, and made the finalist list for the PEN/Faulkner award.
Nguyen and his family came to the United States as refugees during the Vietnam War in 1975. As he grew up in America, he noticed that most movies and books about the war focused on Americans, while the Vietnamese were silenced and erased. He was inspired by this lack of representation to write about the war from a Vietnamese perspective. The Committed, published in 2021, has been called “a masterwork” and “revelatory.” Nguyen’s book, Nothing Ever Dies: Vietnam and the Memory of War, was a finalist for the National Book Award. His collection of short stories, The Refugees, explored questions of immigration, identity, love, and family. In 2018, Nguyen called on 17 fellow refugee writers from across the globe to shed light on their experiences, and the result was The Displaced.
Our event is free to the public. No tickets are required. Visit our website for additional information.

Donald Platt Swansdown Book Release
Join us to celebrate the launch of Donald Platt’s latest book of poetry, Swansdown. He will read from the book, with a short Q&A to follow.
In Swansdown, we see Platt at his most vulnerable, navigating the inevitable slowdowns of aging—illnesses, nostalgias, and the impossible loss of family and friends. All the while, these elegant poems render the world in bountiful technicolor, finding beauty everywhere: in sparrows doing their busywork, the resilience of star magnolias, and Joan Miró’s surrealism. “What have I to show for six decades,” the poet asks and answers with the immaculate imagery and sonorousness that have always been hallmarks of his work. Swansdown is as much a testament to Platt’s humanism as it is to his brilliance in verse.

The Testimony Service (part of the Spirit & Place Festival)
Sat, November 12, 2022, 5:00 PM – 8:00 PM EST
Broadway United Methodist Church 609 East 29th Street Indianapolis, IN 46205
The Testimony Service: I Made It. You Made It. We Made It, Together
To identify means to recognize the existence of a thing. This event, which is rooted in the testimony tradition of the Black church, invites the public to identify the ways they have experienced triumph in their lives.
Using interactive writing activities followed by a live musical performance and storytelling from a group of community “testifiers,” this event welcomes everyone to celebrate and share in life’s joys.
Hear from pre-selected community testifiers (and then perhaps share your own story!), make art, listen to music, sit down to a community meal, and join in fellowship with others who want to share what’s good in the world right now. Although rooted in a specific religious tradition, this event eagerly welcomes all!
This event is presented in partnership with The Learning Tree and Broadway United Methodist Church as part of the Spirit & Place Festival.
ABOUT SPIRIT & PLACE: The Spirit & Place Festival (Nov. 3-13) celebrates the powerful role the arts, humanities, and religion play in community life and is housed in the IU School of Liberal Arts at IUPUI. Learn more at spiritandplace.org.

New Words: The Poetics of Witnessing Joy
Wednesday, Nov 16 6:30 – 8:30 PM at Marian University.
This poetry workshop focuses on the craft of poetry and practice the act of witnessing in poems by looking at the work of poets like Ross Gay, Lucille Clifton, Franny Choi, and more to ultimately lead us toward new ways to explore about how we witness joy in our own lives.
~
We need new words for what this is, this hunger entering our loneliness like birds, stunning our eyes into rays of hope. We need the flutter that can save us, something that will swirl across the face of what we have become and bring us grace. – Lucille Clifton
Inspired by Lucille Clifton’s quote above, Indiana Writers Center and UnLearn Arts have collaborated to create a 3-workshop series, focusing on dreaming, joy, and wellness that will inspire its participants to dream of new worlds through poetry in Indianapolis.
