Presenting Zionsville poet, Donna Monday
Thursday, December 4 @ 6:30 p.m.
SullivanMunce Cultural Center, Zionsville, IN.
The event is free and open to the public.
Monday writes poetry for children, so bring the kids. An open mic will follow the reading.
Donna Monday has been writing poetry since the tender age of 12, when she penned a poem published in her local paper, the Greenfield Reporter. Her dad carried that dog-eared poem in his wallet for decades. “I guess that got me hooked on both poetry and newspapers,” she says. “That and the fact that my hometown was the birthplace of Hoosier Poet James Whitcomb Riley. I always thought the way to get rich and famous was to become a poet. ” Not so, she has since learned.
Nonetheless, Monday continues to write poetry and especially enjoys writing and reading children’s poetry. She is the author of Dancing in the Alley, a collection of her poetry. She holds a B.A. Degree from Hanover College with graduate work at Butler University and Indiana Wesleyan, and has taught elementary school.
Years ago she edited a local Zionsville newspaper and, in addition to writing the news, obituaries, sports and features, she wrote a popular humor column entitled “Monday Madness.” She says those columns brought her real joy. “One of my greatest thrills,” she says, “was finding my column on people’s refrigerators. That’s personal space in everyone’s house, and I was humbled to be included there.”
In addition to being a poet, a newspaperwoman, and a former fifth-grade teacher, Monday was an award-winning car/truck salesperson in Zionsville. She recently retired from Pearson Ford after more than 20 years. She now writes a column for the Current , a local weekly. In addition to writing, she loves spending time with her two children and six grandchildren and her many treasured friends.
